Upon arriving at the Workshop, we will introduce you to our world, where the “tonas and nahuales” live; animals with spirit, carved and decorated with motifs represented in our Zapotec calendar. We will guide you from start to finish through a journey that encompasses each of the stages of making our pieces, explaining in detail how a log of wood can become a work of art. You will have the opportunity to witness up close the processes carried out by the artisans who make up our different areas.

The tour consists of the following: first, we will talk to you about our projects and the vision of the Workshop. Next, you will move on to a demonstration where you will see how we obtain the natural dyes with which we decorate the pieces. We use insects, plants, seeds, fruits, and other natural elements to create the colors. We will tell you about our sacred copal tree, from which we derive the wood for creating the tonas, and we will tell you what your protective animal is according to the Zapotec calendar.

Subsequently, you will learn about the process of making the pieces: carving, repairing, and decorating. Likewise, we will show you our various innovation projects, such as our contemporary jewelry line, local clay ceramics, and our bioconservation project. You will finish in the gallery where you can appreciate the ongoing exhibition and, if you wish, purchase a finished piece.

Since its inception, the Jacobo & María Ángeles Workshop has always kept its doors open to the public, promoting inclusion and diversity among our collaborators and visitors. For us, it is a pleasure to share with all of you a bit of our worldview, techniques, and processes.The tour is free of charge.: the idea is for you to learn about the process of creation, the effort, and the love that we put into each work.
