Brothers of the Earth

Wood and stone can be inert materials. Human action – as well as cosmic and natural processes – can shape elements that seem to rest in an eternal dream. From a "glance", the craftsman is able to find the image of an extinct animal in the branch of a fallen tree, to multiply the visual senses that a trunk can derive, to chisel and shape in stone the tides of images that inhabit his mind.

The stone and wood they use are, in themselves, elements of significance: copal and fossil. From the varieties of copal, from its ritual and creative sense, multiple scenarios can be derived: the resin is cleared into smoke, which cleans, as they tell us, the space of negativity.

Fossils amaze us because they are objects that have condensed time and have preserved the primordial form that constitutes them: they are messages from a remote corner, imbued with a magical element. The shape of the spiral refers to cyclical time, introspection, and inner reflection. The spiral of a snail informs us about ancient times, times we know precisely because of the hardness of stone. This need to recognize, to think about the origin, is important for this body of work.

“On calmer nights, the surface of the Ocean sees Nautilus approaching among corals. There, its old age listens to the voice of the wood.”

Araceli Mancilla
