Winged Wolf
International Tourism Fair 2022
Within the Zapotec worldview, there are Tonas and Nahuales that serve as protective animals and spiritual guides. Since their inception, Tonas and Nahuales have been one of the main inspirations for the Jacobo and María Ángeles Workshop for their beautiful sculptures carved from copal wood.
The artisans of San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca, carve the pieces with machetes, gouges, and knives, and then hand-decorate them using natural pigments such as indigo and cochineal. Preserving these inherited knowledges and continuing their tradition.
For FITUR 2022, the workshop presents a fusion of a wolf with eagle wings. Each symbol within this piece has a meaning, and together they tell a story.
On one hand, the wolf is an animal that lives in packs, hunts collaboratively, cares for and defends its own, organizes, and shares. Meanwhile, the eagle has powerful vision; flying high allows it to see the complete panorama and not just a fraction of it.
BOTH SPECIES ARE ENDANGERED.
Currently, our society is also threatened by a pandemic and an imminent climate crisis. What can we do about it?
This wolf looking at a rain of hummingbirds shares with us great wisdom, which is about collaboration, mutual care, community, and openness to a wide range of possibilities. Having a long-term panoramic view in which we support each other to move forward. This piece represents hope.
THIS EXHIBITION ENCOMPASSES THE VISION THAT JACOBO AND MARÍA HAVE BUILT OVER 27 YEARS.
THEY HAVE BUILT IT ON THREE PILLARS:
Dignified livelihoods through trades, generating employment, reducing migration, and
strengthening the pride and roots of young people for their land.
Respect for the environment and business sustainability through reforestation and
food sovereignty (native corn is still being planted).
Development of young people through art, sports, and culture to break physical
and mental barriers.
All of this is based on traditional forms of organization like the Guelaguetza. Their work aims to be an inspiration for other communities, towns, and businesses. This work is the result of the efforts of a team of more than 25 people. It is a demonstration of how tradition can be preserved while innovating at the same time.
