From the earth

Memory is one of our greatest treasures. It is the record of some idea, feeling, or concern, and its possibility to return and relive.

From the earth is a collection that starts from the idea of preserving and cherishing. The series consists of various miniature animals from the wildlife of San Martín Tilcajete, whether they are present or extinct. On the other hand, it includes a category of animal fusions, which are larger in size than the rest of the figures in the series. As a tribute, they are immortalized to be remembered in the future.

As if it were an act of childhood, the pieces refer to the capture of little bugs in small containers. Preserving them implies a meticulousness equivalent to that of acquiring an amulet. That is why this exhibition is conceived with its display device, rescuing different minerals and resources that the earth provides us.

Each of our pieces is encapsulated by a delicate glass dome, which fits over a fine wooden base, from which each little animal is supported. A device with museum connotation, but also of a laboratory. A non-scientific record of what was, and of what happens. A dystopian projection of being accompanied by a trapped creature, which interacts with the person outside the glass by looking into their eyes.

Wild tonitas from the town that, contained in their capsules, recover the imagery of the worldview of the Jacobo and María Ángeles workshop. We believe that artistic actions, beyond being merely technical acts, are also acts of memory, exercises of capture. We capture what we want to preserve, we preserve what we want to treasure.

“We are our memory, we are that chimerical museum of inconstant forms, that pile of broken mirrors.”

Jorge Luis Borges
