Bull-Eagle

First International Fair of Magical Towns

The workshop Jacobo and María Ángeles will participate in the First International Fair of Magical Towns, showcasing a monumental piece: Bull-Eagle Fusion.

Both animals, the bull and the eagle, have very deep symbolism that we are interested in understanding and rescuing. On one hand, the bull has had great relevance in agriculture and in Mexican gastronomy, a mestizo gastronomy. Likewise, it holds a cultural polysemy that spans the entire world: from India, Egypt, Babylon, China, Greece, etc. Furthermore, the bull is not an endemic animal of the continent, thus from the beginning it carries a connotation of cultural exchange.

On the other hand, the eagle is an icon that is constantly repeated in the representation of power, not only in Latin America but also within Western thought currents. It shows us an ironic contrast between the imperialist notion and the warrior notion, the latter of Mexican, Aztec, Zapotec, and Mexica origin.

By merging these animals, we also combine these symbolic strengths, both ambivalent and diverse in themselves. And we build our own narrative and history: A piece that alludes to exchange and multiculturalism, to the variety of perspectives that shape our identities, and how these differences enrich us.

Decorated by a team of twelve people painting at the same time, this piece carries with it the new graphic style line of the workshop, implemented for the first time in the first monumental Guardians. This reinterpretation of Zapotec symbols and their composition in the sculptural body is a proposal carried out by Ricardo Ángeles.

This is the second monumental piece that resides in Europe. We are greatly pleased to continue showcasing our work in other parts of the world.
