Zapotec Sandals II
Birkenstock
Birkenstock and the Jacobo & María Ángeles Workshop (TJYMA) are two brands that share the same philosophy and commitment to offering socially responsible products, carrying out the best management of natural resources to obtain their raw materials.
In September 2020, the brand recognized in the fashion industry for its comfort and design partnered with TJYMA, creating a creative synergy that resulted in a collection of 336 unique pairs of sandals. Each pair was crafted with the dedication and perfection that characterizes every shape, line, and stroke with which we decorate our wooden figures known as “Tonas and Nahuales.” The collection was available exclusively in the online store and in some Birkenstock boutiques in Mexico City.
This collaboration goes hand in hand with our bioconservation project "Palo Que Habla" (PQH), dedicated to the regeneration of ecosystems in the Valley of Ocotlán through the reforestation of the copal tree, a native species of our territory and the raw material we use to carve our wooden figures. In addition to honoring Mexican culture and its artisans, the central objective of this collaboration was to enhance the productive capacity of PQH.
Birkenstock allocated one hundred percent of the profits generated from the sale of this collaboration to the construction of a forestry nursery capable of producing 50,000 trees per year. These trees will be reforested in San Martín Tilcajete and neighboring communities, capturing carbon, generating fertile soil, recharging aquifers, and above all, ensuring the continuity of the craft.
