Referring to the popular art of Oaxaca means talking about many communities in the Central Valleys of the state that currently produce handicrafts, it is to mention the indigenous towns that surround its capital, Oaxaca de Juárez, mainly those belonging to the districts of Centro and Ocotlán: San Bartolo Coyoyepec, San Antonio Arrazola, Santo Tomás Jalieza, San Antonino Castillo Velasco, and of course, San Martín Tilcajete. Among these handicrafts, the carving of copal wood has become a prominent activity to which more than 200 families are currently dedicated in various workshops, all of them creators of excellent figures whose characteristics evoke the so-called "magical realism" of Oaxaca.
